This anc...Paul Muni ... underacting ... who knew?! This ancient film has several things going for it despite the 'early-sound-film' creaks that can't be overcome. Sure, there's laughable plot points and over-arch acting still stuck in the 1910s. Still, the dialog is at times prescient and rather more direct than post-code films would permit. In the midst of this, Paul Muni gives the most restrained performance of his career. Yes, he's rather tangential in the earlier sequences, but the final section between he and a finally settled down Marguerite Chapman has some of the most sublime film acting either ever did. Muni would revert to stagy-ness later on but here he underplays to perfection.
